Berlin, Germany

Berlin

The capital of Germany, Berlin lies in the northeast of the country surrounded by the State of Brandenburg. With a population of more than 3.8 million inhabitants, Berlin is the most populous city of not only Germany, but also the EU (since Brexit). It has an area of about 900 km² of which one third is covered by forests, parks, gardens, lakes, canals and rivers. The most prominent river flowing through the city is the Spree and the most significant lakes include the Müggelsee and the Wannsee.

Berlin has very few tall buildings, the tallest being the Fernsehturm (TV-Tower) with a height of 368 m making it easy to be seen from almost anywhere in the city. With a complicated past, especially due to the events that occurred during the second half of the 20th century, the city also has a lot of history to learn about (though not many historical buildings which survived the wars). This can be done through visiting any of the more than 170 museums the city has to offer or by simply visiting sites like the remains of the Berlin Wall. However, the city also has lots of other attractions worth visiting like the Zoological Garden, the most visited zoo in Europe and one of the most popular in the world. Overall, Berlin also boasts a high standard of living, however as property prices are rising the city is becoming out of reach for many.

The Fernsehturm was built between 1965 and 1969 and is located in former East Berlin at the Alexanderplatz. With its height of 368 m it is not only the tallest building in Berlin, but also in all of Germany. Today it serves as a broadcasting station and a tourist attraction and venue. At 207 m, visitors can dine in the tower restaurant, which sits inside the 4,800 tonne heavy sphere and rotates 360 degrees every hour, or go to the observation platform 4 m below.
